RAW.
I have become completely disillusioned with Nikon. I am Not Happy about their support for Photoshop. I knew there were rumours flying around about Nikon encrypting the white balance data in their NEF (RAW) files, but I thought they came to some sort of agreement. Well, agreement to screw their customers over, perhaps.
Adobe's Camera RAW plugin is awesome. I used to use it with my Canon. It lets you tweak just about anything. Nikon's NEF plugin for Photoshop is completely shit.

See that white balance drop-down? You can't even fine-tune it. You are presented with a few options, like "Sunlight" or "Fluroscent". Photoshop's Camera RAW plugin lets you set degrees Kelvin. And about a hundred other options, not just "Exposure Compensation".
Oh, right, Nikon includes software for handling RAW images. The cumbersome Picture Project, which allows about the same level of editing as Nikon's Photoshop plugin, and doesn't export TIFFs, or a fucking trial version of another piece of software, Nikon Capture. That's right, you spend $1500 on a camera, and they won't even give you a fucking full version of their software. That really shits me.
Adobe isn't much better either. Camera RAW for Photoshop CS can't edit NEF files from the D70S, because of the encryption thing. Well, Adobe and Nikon have cooperated, and Adobe has updated their Camera RAW plugin to support NEFs from the D70S. But only for Photoshop CS2, not just CS. There is no reason the plugin wouldn't work with CS, Adobe just wants you to buy CS2, even if you have no other reason to upgrade.
Fuck Nikon, and fuck Adobe. Bastards.

I hear ya, I think. I'm still using PS7. The most compelling reason to upgrade is new brushes that won't work in 7.

I've been doing most work with my Mac mini over the last couple of months, and I got quite frustrated with that plugin and Photoshop CS. Especially as 10.4.2/iPhoto 5.0.4 doesn't do the Nikon RAW as found in output from the D50/D70s.
Just playing with my PowerBook again, and I double clicked (by accident) on one of my RAW files, and preview opened it. I thought "hrm, that's odd". Firstly put it down to Photoshop CS2 (which I do have on this machine), then it occurred to me that I er, have a pre-release of 10.4.3, and iPhoto can handle them. Now, of course CS2 has decided that it it's going to be bloody difficult and won't start. Off to shoot Adobe, I guess.

I've been wondering when Apple was going to start supporting RAW. I don't just want to be able to open files, I want the use of the Camera RAW plugin.

Note the D70 is supported by the Camera RAW plugin for Photoshop CS, but the D70S requires a later version of that plugin which is only available for CS2.
