Beginning/End

I'm wrapping up Kids in Melbourne. It was a fun project, but while I envisaged it as a photography project, it really wasn't. A series of fashion photos is about fashion, not photography. It's also become more of a chore so I see no reason to keep doing something I'm not enjoying.

It has helped me take better portraits, which is good. Particularly in terms of how to approach strangers, and timing for facial expressions.

The archive will, of course, be preserved.

To satisfy your Melbourne fashion hunger, try Third Best or Melbourne Runway.

With the end of one project comes the start of a new one.

I've just joined the 365 Days group on flickr, whose members take one self-portrait every day for a year. I'm hoping this forced daily exercise will teach me more about controlling composition and light. Very little of my work is set-up, which is how I like it, but actually determining the elements I seek to find in candid and street photography should develop my eye.

I won't be blogging every photo, the collection can be viewed in this set. I also won't be posting a photo every day, because some will be film and I rarely get to shoot, develop and scan a film photo in one day. The ritual is in the taking of the photo and I will be doing that every day.
