Responding To Yesterday's Threats

Either monkeys or George Bush himself is in charge of his security. Nine MSN reports that during Bush's upcoming visit to Sydney, a helicopter will fly above his motorcade and jam mobile phone signals over an area about the size of a football field.

Mobile phones have been used to detonate bombs in the past. Of course, mobile telephony is not the only type of remote communication, and I bet that if someone can build a detonator triggered by a mobile phone, he could build a detonator triggered by almost anything.

I wonder how many Sydneysiders' phone calls will be interrupted or blocked by a visitor the vast majority of them consider unwelcome?

Furthermore, it comes as no surprise that John Howard previously stated that there would be no interruption to mobile service during Bush's visit.

"People are not prevented from using their mobile phones," he said.

"I'm not going to get into the specifics of security matters. I think any suggestion that normal communication won't continue to apply would not be appropriate."

Uninformed of the US's planned security measures and unwilling to demand the US heeds what he determines is appropriate, and what is inappropriate.
