The latest update to OS X includes support for the Nikon D70s' NEF file format. You can now use Preview to view the files, get thumbnails in the Finder and use iPhoto to organize them.

I haven't used the iPhoto support for NEFs yet, I don't really see the point. iPhoto can't edit RAW files anywhere near as well as the CameraRAW plugin for Photoshop can, and I already use Adobe Bridge to organize my shots. It performs a lot better than iPhoto, it's much faster and uses less memory. It also doesn't copy the files to its own database, like iPhoto does, which may be a good or a bad thing depending on your view. It's much more integrated with Photoshop than iPhoto is.

It's nice that I can get preview of the files in the Finder.

I said Alaina would be a candy raver.
Alaina said I would be a guy wearing a pink polo shirt with my collar popped. You know the type.
Em, possibly a goth.
Matt would be Missy Elliot. Work it.
Fred would be Bjork.
Liz would be Moira Brenner, the author of "Modern Etiquette". Hyacinth Bucket can be seen placing that book on her shelf in the opening credits of Keeping Up Appearances.
James would be Tony Robbins.
Alaina reckons Campbell would be Enrique Iglesias, but I'm not so sure about that one, I think they've got a certain similarity to them. Maybe Campbell could be Phillip Ruddock.

If, in some crazy topsy-turvy world, we were inviting John Howard to such a party, he could come as Bill Hicks. I think Beazley could come as Groundmaster Willy, but Alaina isn't convinced.

When I got home after coffee today, Kerry had just finished watering the garden and it was all glistening with little water beads. I thought I might take the opportunity to try out some macro photography, something I've never really done before. Daylight savings has started now, and it was still quite light, but not light enough, and I really needed to use a flash. The shadows cast from my built-in flash are really harsh and especially prominent in close-up shots, so I made a makeshift light diffuser out of the top of a slide box, lined on the inside with some thin paper. It worked pretty well, as you can see, the photos have a nice soft light.

The flash still puts out plenty of light, in the photo below it has completely drowned out the natural background light. It reminds me of this photo.

This photo was taken in the same light, but with the flash on slow sync and turned right down.

This is the diffuser:

And this is the effect it has on shadows:

Without the diffuser:

With the diffuser:

Works pretty well, I think. The only drawback is I need to hold on to it, which makes zooming and pressing buttons inconvenient. Plus it looks a bit silly.

***UPDATE***

I've made a bracket to attach it to the hot shoe, and covered the back of the body to stop light being thrown out onto my forehead. Handsfree operation!

The tab underneath slides into the hotshoe.

I would like to show a photo of the camera with the diffuser on, but I only have one camera. It can't photograph itself from the side. This is the best I can do:

***UPDATE***

Here's a couple of photos I took using Kevin's digital camera. They're not very clear, but they show a sense of scale.

Spot the diff?

I was looking on the iTMS for Architecture in Helsinki video clips (there are none) and I noticed the tracks on the "In Case We Die" CD are different from what's online. Not only is the order different, on the iTMS, there's a sweet dub-dirrrrty-bass-funk version of Do The Whirlwind, as well as two other songs, and it's missing some songs from the CD.

On one hand, this is cool, because it's three more AIH songs for my listening pleasure. But I wonder what other albums have discrepancies like that? WHAT ELSE AM I MISSING OUT ON?

I was about to post more polyphasic sleep news, but I imagine that would get pretty boring after a while. It might end up something like:

My 8am nap was pretty good, it took a while to get to sleep for the 12pm, I overslept my 4pm by 15 minutes, then couldn't sleep at my 8pm, missed my 12am, overslept my 4am, 8am was ok, so was 12pm, 4pm had trouble getting to sleep, blah blah blah...

And we don't want that to happen. So I will keep it short.

It's really hard. I'm trying to make sure I at least lie down for half an hour, even if I don't get to sleep. Today, after not sleeping properly for 24 hours, I overslept, right through my work shift. Oops! My body clock is so fucked up now, I'm tired all the time, which is good in a way because it means I can pretty much nap on command. I'm having real problems reading, and tend to laugh hysterically at things I know aren't that funny. I'm also eating a lot more.

It's still early days. I'll master it yet.

In other news, I went to go to a sneak preview opening for the new design centre at Federation Square, because I had already missed the majority of afforementioned work shift, but turned up too late. It opens officially on Saturday morning.

Then I went out to a gallery opening in Prahran, "Ben Frost is Dead", only to find out that it was a private function. I was pissed off for most of the evening about that, until I re-read the website announcement a couple of hours ago, and realized the opening is in two weeks' time. Must have been some other private function on tonight. Whoops! I blame my lack of sleep.

Time for my 4am nap!

I've been through the Wikipedia article again, set up a schedule, and started the sleep-pattern-changing process.

I came across two links today, one that looks useful, a better way to wake up, and another that is not so comforting, the author of polyphasicsleepcycle.blogspot.com has given up, citing incompatibility with his schedule and life in general.

Wikipedia talks of some people getting a "core sleep" of two or three hours, and a few naps during the day. It's a balance between spending the minimum amount of time asleep, and fitting in with one's schedule. This might be the best compromise for me.

I'm not sure how this will turn out. My work hours are not flexible. They don't fit into my planned sleep schedule. I'm not sure how it will work with regards to my social life, I often want to go out more than four hours at a time. What I do know is I resent sleep, and am willing to try anything once, except incest and folk dancing. So here goes.

I actually tried to start on the weekend, but ended up sleeping all day Sunday, staying awake all Sunday night, getting a nap early Monday morning, falling asleep at about 3am Tuesday morning, then waking up at 4pm. After that I started properly. I got a good nap at midnight, tried to sleep again at 4am but ended up just lying there, I think because I had a coffee at about 2am. It'll be time for my 8am soon, and although I'm pretty tired right now, the sun is shining bright, so I'm not sure how I'll go.

From The Age today:

PRIME Minister John Howard has been forced to agree to further discussions with the states after claims by Queensland and Western Australia that the proposed counter-terrorism laws may be unconstitutional.

The setback for the legislation — due in Parliament next week and to be passed before Christmas — came as federal Labor got off the fence to slam the package.

The Opposition urged major changes, including tougher judicial oversight, redrafting of the sedition provision, withdrawal of "shoot to kill" and amendments to the 10-year sunset clause.
